Avalon Heritage Ltd are independent heritage consultants who provide a wide range of heritage services to developers, planners, architects and property owners who may require heritage input within pre-application and planning led environments.
We have extensive experience in the preparation of Heritage Impact Statements, Statements of Significance, Desk Based Assessments, Historic Building Recording and Structural Watching Briefs.
The founder of Avalon Heritage Ltd and the principal heritage consultant, Helen Martin-Bacon B.A., M.A., PgDip, MCIFA, has worked in the industry for 30 years.
Prior to forming her own consultancy she worked for 10 years as a heritage consultant for a large multi-discipline engineering and environmental company. Before joining this company Helen worked as field archaeologist and therefore has extensive experience of managing archaeological investigations of all types in a wide variety of situations from urban to greenfield.
She is skilled at undertaking Heritage Impact Assessments, Statements of Significance, Setting Assessments, Historic Buildings Assessments, Archaeological Desk -Based Assessments and at producing archaeological strategies and mitigation schemes when below ground remains are challenge to developers. She has also project managed a variety of large-scale, complex development projects where archaeology and heritage have been major issues.
Helen is very well versed in all aspects of heritage legislation and government guidance on the historic environment and has been successful in winning a number of appeal cases where heritage has been at issue. All her reports are prepared in accordance with the standards and guidance laid down by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and Historic England as well as being compliant with government guidance as set down in the National Planning Policy Framework. She is experienced at providing heritage and archaeological advice to clients and guiding them through the planning process when heritage and archaeology is a constraint. She has established a very good working relationship with a number of County and City Planning Archaeologists and Conservation Officers and provides efficient liaison between them and the client.

Identifying potential heritage constraints from the outset can prevent costly redesigns later in the planning process and reduce the need for architects to revise plans in response to heritage or conservation concerns.
